East Boston

East Boston originally acted as the shipbuilding hub for Boston area ports. Contemporary East Boston maintains its shipbuilding roots, but the neighborhood has morphed into a popular home for young professionals. Located near the outer edges of downtown Boston, East Boston includes an aesthetically appealing combination of new and old residential architecture. Neighborhood leaders have raised the financial resources to restore the neighborhood's iconic triple deck homes for both single family and multi-family residents. East Boston residents enjoy a spectacular view of the downtown Boston waterfront.

The Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) has invested a substantial amount of money in East Boston over the past decade. New residential housing construction and park enhancements have increased the value of homes. Six community gardens transform East Boston from an urban outpost into a colorful natural spectacle. Residents receive small plots to plant whatever they like for an affordable annual fee. The presence of so many community gardens attracts eco-friendly residents that keep East Boston on top of the environmental curve. Located across from venerable Umana School, Nuestro Jardin (Our Garden) thrives from the cultivation of a community operated youth program.

Recently upgraded condominiums that line Eagle Hill, Jefferies Point, and Maverick Square provide the housing for the young professionals that spend most of their disposable income within East Boston. Jefferies Point has witnessed a strong increase in housing demand, as homebuyers enjoy the prime real estate located near Piers Park and the Boston Harbor. The MTBA Blue Line makes multiple stops in East Boston to provide residents with quick access to downtown Boston and points well beyond. East Boston connects to Downtown Boston via several bridges and tunnels, although some residents taking the more serene ferry services that shuffle residents and tourists back and forth across the Boston Harbor. Massport offers free shuttle bus service between the Airport Blue Line station and Logan International Airport, which forms the eastern boundary of the neighborhood.
