Porter Square

Porter Square Homes For Sale

Located equidistant between Tufts University and Harvard University, Porter Square provides residents with a nostalgic look at 18th century New England life, without diminishing the importance of moving into the 21st century. The neighborhood borders Davis and Harvard Squares and like most Cambridge neighborhoods, Porter Square derives much of its commercial activity from small businesses located along Massachusetts Avenue. In addition to specialty shops and art galleries, Porter Square is home to several startup biotechnology firms staffed by graduates of nearby Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Between 2004 and 2006, extensive construction within the central business district enhanced access for bicyclists and pedestrians, as well as expanded operations at the Porter Square MBTA station. The construction improved storm water drainage, which in turn, augmented the property values of homeowners living in the neighborhood. Renovated buildings tower above light and dark stone walls.

Lesley University relocated its College of Art and Design to venerable North Prospect Church. The relocation opened the door for the university to expand within the Porter Square neighborhood. Many residents work at the university, which allows them to walk to work and hence, enjoy a higher quality of life due to the absence of stressed induced driving within greater Boston. University Hall located on Massachusetts Avenue typifies the Art Deco style of building design found within Porter Square. Single and double family brownstones dominate residential real estate in a neighborhood that lists near the top of Cambridge neighborhoods for average property values.

The Shops at Porter comprise a wide array of ethnic restaurants that receive acclaim from Boston area food critics. Fresh seafood transported in from nearby Boston Harbor accentuates the fresh ingredients that culinarians use for devising eclectic menus. The MBTA red line moves through Porter Square on its way to the Alewife light rail terminus. Porter Square sits about a mile west of Interstate 93, which represents one of the main thoroughfares for commuters to reach downtown Boston.
